Keeping your teeth and braces clean

Having braces is an investment in the future for both your oral health and a great smile. That’s why it’s critical you look after your teeth during treatment with some extra diligence when it comes to brushing and oral care.

In truth, maintaining good oral hygiene with braces isn’t hard or particularly time-consuming, it just involves committing to a regular routine, and using the right equipment at the right time.

Why it’s so important

Initially, the brackets and wires can be it a little tricky to get around when cleaning your teeth. However, with time, it will become second nature.

The best way to guard against tooth decay and gum disease is good oral care, including a little bit of extra time spent brushing, and attention to detail.

Orthodontic treatment can be paused or stopped completely if adequate oral hygiene is not maintained.

Here’s what we advise for Keeping teeth and braces clean

Regular brushing

Brushing should be part of everyone’s daily routine, and, when wearing braces, we recommend brushing after every meal or at least three times a day using a fluoride toothpaste. This will reduce the risk of tooth decay or gum disease.

The right brush

When brushing, we advise using a soft bristle tooth brush with a smaller head. The smaller head allows you to reach even those hard-to-access areas and give them the attention they need.

The right technique

Cleaning teeth, wires and brackets requires you to be firm, yet gentle. The last thing you want to do is dislodge a bracket or aggravate your gums by brushing too vigorously.

Spend at least 10 seconds brushing each tooth, pressing firmly enough to get into the gaps between teeth, and to work around the brackets and wires.

Cleaning in between your teeth and around your braces

Flossing and cleaning around the braces remains an important part of your daily routine.

As it can a little harder to floss around the brackets and wires, Superfloss and floss picks or Piksters can be valuable aids.

Regular dental check ups

Part of your orthodontic schedule will involve regular appointments with your dentist. This enables us to offer additional assistance in keeping teeth and braces clean. Our clinicians and dental nurses will also provide initial advice about caring for your braces, and the products that we recommend.
