Common questions

FAQs

How do I know which dental orthodontic treatment is right for me?

The appropriate treatment depends on factors such as tooth position, bite, jaw relationships, age and your specific concerns. At your first consultation, Dr Shimanto evaluates these factors before discussing ideal treatment options.

Can adults still get clear aligners or braces in Sydney?

Absolutely. Orthodontic treatment in Sydney is available to adults as well as children and teenagers. Depending on your orthodontic needs, options may include fixed braces, Invisalign or Spark clear aligners. An assessment is required to determine which option is clinically suitable for you.

At what age should a child first be assessed for jaw alignment by an orthodontist?

Children should generally have their first orthodontic assessment by age 7. Around this age, a mix of baby and permanent teeth gives an orthodontist useful information about how the teeth, bite and jaws are forming. An early assessment does not mean treatment needs to start straight away. In many cases, the orthodontist may simply monitor growth and development until the appropriate time to intervene.

What is the difference between clear aligners and traditional fixed braces?

Fixed braces use brackets and wires attached to the teeth throughout treatment. Clear aligners use a sequence of removable aligners designed to gradually move the teeth. Both can address a range of orthodontic issues, but neither is automatically the better choice for every patient. The suitable option depends on the type and complexity of tooth movement required, your bite and other individual factors.

Do I need a dental referral to start treatment with my orthodontist?

No. You can arrange your first appointment with Norwest Orthodontics at a time that's most convenient to you. If your dentist has already provided a referral, you're welcome to bring it along to your appointment.
