After you plate is fitted…

  • It may take a few days to get used to a palatal expander. Chewing, swallowing and talking may feel awkward or different at first. The mouth and nose may be sore and may tingle. Some patients report a slight headache.
  • You can take over the counter analgesics such as Nurofen or Panadol to manage any discomfort.
  • Sticking to soft foods during the adjustment period is also helpful. Some examples include rice, pasta, scrambled egg, jelly and custard. Find our soft recipes eBook below!
  • After a few days of expanding, you may notice some space between the front teeth. This is normal and a sign the appliance is working to expand the palate correctly.
