What are plates?
A plate is a dental device that is designed to fit around either the top teeth, bottom teeth, or in some cases, both.
These plates can be used to modify the growth or improve the position of the teeth and jaws, create space in the jaw to correct narrowness and lack of room for adult teeth, hold space open for the eruption of adult teeth or correct bite issues (i.e. crossbite, underbite or overbite).
Functional orthopaedic appliances are designed to work in conjunction with a patient’s growth, effectively correcting functional issues. These appliances are particularly impactful when utilised at an early stage.
In a lot of cases, use of these appliances can eliminate the need for a surgical correction later on in life. Dr Shimanto can advise if the use of a plate is right for you or your child.
