Why it’s so important to wear your retainer!

What most people don’t realise is that wearing braces for improvement in tooth alignment doesn’t necessarily mean it’s for life.  Orthodontic retention is one of most important stages of aligning your teeth, making sure that the improvements you’ve made by wearing braces will remain permanent.

After your braces are removed, there is still work to do to get the smile you want. When we remove your braces, the retention phase of your treatment begins. The final smile result you get will ultimately depend on your retainer, so don’t throw in all the hard work by not following through with your retainer.

Retainers are custom-made to suit your specific teeth alignment. Retainers can be thin and fixed in place behind the teeth so they are not visible, are not noticeable and you do not have to worry about forgetting to wear them. Retainer can also be removable and are used day and night initially and then possibly just wear them at night. Most people prefer the aesthetic fixed retainer option but removable retainers are alternative for many people.

It’s important to wear your retainer as it ensures that all the hard work of orthodontics braces is not wasted. How long you have to use a retainer depends on the movement of your teeth. We regularly monitor and review your teeth alignment so we know when you can stop with your orthodontic treatment altogether.
