Why do I need to wear a retainer?

It is highly important to wear a retainer as part of ongoing orthodontic treatment.

Most commonly, it is necessary to wear a retainer after you have had braces. Everybody is different but it can take at least a year for your teeth to stabilise after you have had your braces removed.  The consistent use of a retainer is vital to ensuring your teeth stay exactly where you, and your orthodontist, want them to be.

After the commitment and investment you have made in wearing your braces, the most detrimental thing you could do is undermine all that work by not wearing a retainer. It is a relatively unobtrusive way to maintain the new position of your teeth and jaw and without it, your teeth could move and shift, undoing all of your hard work.

Retainers can also used as the main device in replacement of traditional braces in some realignment cases. In these instances, the end result is entirely dependent on the correct and consistent use of the retainer.

Norwest Orthodontics are happy to advise on the best ways to ensure that all the hard work you have put into your braces doesn’t go to waste. For more information on the importance and the benefits of consistently wearing a retainer, please contact the team at Norwest Orthodontics on 9672 6113.
