Braces terminology – what do all these words mean?

Getting orthodontic treatment can be an overwhelming process, but not understanding what language your specialist orthodontist is speaking can be even more confusing. To help you through your orthodontic journey, Norwest Orthodontics has put together a list of braces terminology of new words that you are likely to hear over and over again in your orthodontic appointments.

Orthodontic treatment like Braces or Invisalign corrects the position of teeth and the jaw to ensure they are in the ideal position.

Braces is the term for the device that we may use to start your orthodontic treatment. They are generally comprised of brackets, bands and wires which move teeth into their desired position.

Brackets are bonded directly to your teeth and hold the wires in place.

Bands are also bonded directly to your teeth and hold the wires in place. However, they are usually placed on teeth further back in the mouth when they are needed.

Wires are held in place by brackets and bands and provide the force necessary to move teeth into their desired alignment.

The Damon System is exclusively used by Norwest Orthodontics in the Hills District. They are gentle, less painful and more comfortable system that allows for shorter treatment times, better aesthetics and requires fewer, if any, extractions of teeth. The Damon System is also easy to clean, making the maintenance of good oral hygiene easy. They are the ideal option for both adults and children. The Damon brackets have a tiny, built-in slide that gently holds the wire in place. Unlike the Damon System, other styles of braces use elastics or active clips that “bind” wires in place. This creates friction and pressure that can slow down treatment. The Damon System eliminates the need for bungee-like rubber O-Rings, reducing friction and binding. Clinically, this results in faster and more comfortable tooth movement.

Damon Clear Braces are a part of the innovative Damon System that Norwest Orthodontics provides. They consist of a clear ceramic bracket that is barely noticeable.

Damon Q Braces are also very aesthetically pleasing. They are a small, metallic bracket that is bonded to the teeth.

Invisalign is the clear alternative to braces. It is an orthodontic treatment that can help achieve a straighter smile. It uses a series of clear, custom-made, comfortable aligners that are changed every two weeks to gradually move teeth into their desired position. Because these aligners are removable, you can eat, drink, brush and floss with ease.
